Abstract
The use of botanical extracts and essential oil in skin care has been increasing due to greater demand on natural ingredients. Tamarind (Tamarindus indica L.) and sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) has been found to possess skin healing effect. Thus, the study was conducted considering that Pampanga produce tamarind and sweet sorghum in commercial scale. The formulations of these trees that were tested soap, ointment/liniment, shower gels, and spa salts against pimples, wounds and skin inflammations on test animals.
Among the plant parts of tamarind, the leaves soap was highly acceptable in terms of its color, odor, texture, hardness, and over-all appearance. Both tamarind and sweet sorghum soap were free from insoluble soap and fatty acid. The percent reduction of acne in using tamarind soap, sweet Sorghum and commercial soap have similar effect on the tenth and twelve days usage. The number of acne pustules was reduced from 10.00 to 2.00. After 12 days of treatment the pustules were totally (100%) treated. The soap with 8% tamarind extract was the most effective in reducing acne.
The gel formulation were effective against Staphylococcus aurous. The tamarind bark ointment was effective anti-inflammatory agent against swelling, redness and healing of wounds in rabbits.
Tamarind scrub salt, shower gel and liniment were highly acceptable and found to be safe and effective. The tamarind and sweet sorghum formulations were comparatively acceptable.
The development of local technology for the production of natural formulations from tamarind and sweet sorghum is highly recommended. A nation-wide acceptability tests among consumers may be considered and further study may be conducted to meet the specifications required in skin care products.
