Quick Facts: Overview of the Philippine Agriculture

The Philippine economy is driven primarily by the service and industry sectors. However, two-thirds of the population is still living in the rural area where agriculture is the main source of livelihood. Let’s have a look at the rundown of some of the figures describing an overview of the Philippine Agriculture.

1. Twenty-four percent (or 71,900 sq km) of the total land area of the Philippines are allotted to agriculture.
2. Forty-eight percent of the total land area for agriculture are planted to temporary crops while 46% are planted to permanent crops.
3. Fifty percent of the total share of agriculture to the country’s GDP is from crops, 14% from livestock, 11% from poultry, 18% from fisheries, and 8% from agricultural services.
4. The major crops in the Philippines are rice, corn, coconut, sugarcane, banana, pineapple, coffee, mango, tobacco, abaca, peanut, mungbean, cassava, sweet potato, tomato, garlic, onion bulb, cabbage, eggplant, calamansi, and rubber.
5. Major livestock are carabao, hog, cattle, goat, dairy and the major fisheries are milkfish, tilapia, tiger prawn, yellowfin tuna. Poultry products in the country are chicken, duck, chicken eggs, and duck eggs.
